Waffle Irons Make More Than Breakfast

Waffle Irons Make More Than Breakfast

Grieving the loss of a loved one is an incredibly challenging experience, encompassing a rollercoaster of emotions that can test one’s sanity. One minute laughter over fond memories fill the room, the next one feels completely and utterly alone.  Anger and tears overwhelm the body. Through this blog post, I want to share my story of discovering a chosen family and the transformative power of meaningful connections.

Finding a Safe Place

In life, loss is inevitable.  Recently two remarkable souls came to the end of their life story. The first loss I experienced was anticipated, allowing me to brace myself for the ensuing grief. However, the second loss blindsided me, hitting me harder than I could have ever anticipated. These individuals had embraced me as family, accepting me without judgment during a difficult period in my life. While my biological family had disintegrated during my childhood, these remarkable souls welcomed me with open arms. Their genuine love and support gradually chipped away at the walls I had built around myself.

It wasn’t an immediate feeling of safety, but rather a gradual process of building trust. Our Sunday breakfast rituals became the foundation for our relationship. From preparing mouthwatering waffles, eggs, and sausages to lending a helping hand with household chores, we created a bond that surpassed blood ties.

The Power of Unexpected Bonds

Blood relations are not the sole determining factor of family. Sometimes, the universe aligns and presents us with strangers who become indispensable to our well-being. These individuals step into our lives during critical moments, supporting us when we need it most.

My newfound family defied societal norms and expectations. They showed me that love and kinship can be found outside the confines of genetics. The bond we cultivated transcended the boundaries of conventional relationships, providing solace and strength during difficult times. They became the family my soul had yearned for.

The Evolution of Family

Over the years, our visits became a loving core part of routine.  Weeks that prevented our ritualistic gatherings wore heavy on the soul. From the smell of sawdust in the woodshop to the pride of maintaining the yard to the countless hours of conversations over card and board games, every experience etched itself into the tapestry of my life.

These precious moments, often overlooked or even criticized by outsiders, became the fabric that wove together our unconventional family. While some may perceive a waffle iron or a table saw as ordinary objects, for me, they hold the weight of countless memories—nearly half a lifetime of shared experiences and heartfelt connections. They reminded me that genuine love transcends biological ties and that the bonds we form with kindred spirits can be just as strong, if not stronger.

The End of Stories and Chapters

While grief has the power to shatter our world, it can also lead us to discover remarkable sources of strength and resilience. In my personal journey, the loss of loved ones brought me face-to-face with the incredible power of unconventional family. The simple act of making waffles together became a symbol of the love, acceptance, and connection we shared. These extraordinary individuals opened their hearts and homes to me, providing a sanctuary where I could rebuild my shattered sense of family.

As we navigate the complexities of life, let us remember that family extends beyond blood relations. By embracing unexpected connections, we unlock the potential for profound transformation and create lasting memories that transcend time. Waffle irons may indeed make more than breakfast; they can symbolize the unbreakable bonds that redefine our understanding of family.

Remember, grief does not have to define us. It can serve as a stimulus for personal growth, resilience, and the discovery of newfound soul ties. Let us cherish those who bring light into our lives and may we all find solace and strength in the power of unconventional connections.
