As I start the next round of the Pillars of Transformation course, I’m reminded of a time when it was difficult to be grateful for much of anything. Life was dark and everything was a fight for survival.
As I’ve gone through this process a number of times now, each round makes me feel more and more enlightened. For example; I used to see medical field workers as people just doing a job. Sure, I would thank the nurse or whomever because manners gets better service, but I still had a hard line about them just doing a job. Once I started getting out of my dark, defensive shell the wall began to crumble. Yes, they are doing their job, but they are PEOPLE helping others.
I’ve had a LOT of injuries over the years. When you max out a health spending account every year, you become very familiar with the people you see all the time. Who end up knowing your body just as good, maybe better than you in some aspects. A huge level of trust is built and before you know it, you’re exchanging personal life stories and inviting each other to events.
BAM!
I learned to be grateful for their service, walls came down and the next thing you know we have a blurred personal/professional relationship.
One place I will always be grateful for is my physical therapists office. They were one of the first places I was able to let the wall crumble. In honor of them, here is a little video put together from one of the sessions.
